Part of the rigid-flex circuit board resource.
Start with the enclosure, components, signal paths, movement, manufacturing volume, and field-service plan. Comparing bare-board price alone can miss connector volume, cable retention, assembly labor, and test effort. Keep the required function constant while evaluating the interconnect architecture.
Integrated rigid-flex
Rigid-flex incorporates rigid component regions and flexible interconnect regions in one manufactured circuit. It can reduce separate connections and fit a constrained three-dimensional enclosure. Its tradeoffs include more specialized fabrication, construction-dependent cost, and replacement of a larger integrated assembly when one region fails.
Flex with a stiffener
A stiffener supports a local connector or component area on a flexible circuit. It does not turn that region into the same multilayer rigid interconnect construction. This can be appropriate when the primary need is a supported tail rather than a dense rigid-region circuit. This site focuses on rigid-flex; pure-flex design is only compared where it changes that decision.
Rigid boards with cables and connectors
Separate boards can support modular sourcing, independent replacement, and simpler board fabrication. The system must accommodate connectors, retention, routing space, mating operations, and cable management. Evaluate those costs and the relevant failure modes against the integrated alternative.
Semi-flex
Semi-flex constructions create a limited forming area with a different material and process approach from conventional polyimide-based rigid-flex. Confirm the intended number of forming operations and the supplier’s geometry limits. Do not use a rigid-flex dynamic-bend assumption for a semi-flex part.
Make the selection testable
Document why the chosen architecture meets packaging, assembly, and service requirements. Build a representative mechanical sample when the fold is uncertain. Measure electrical behavior and test motion where needed. A decision backed by a clear acceptance plan is more useful than a blanket claim that one board type is always better.
