Part of the rigid-flex circuit board resource.
A meaningful rigid-flex price includes a defined stackup, outline, quantities, material system, finish, test scope, and schedule. Area alone cannot describe coverlay work, lamination complexity, or yield. This resource does not publish invented factory prices; the estimator only displays dollar ranges after a manufacturing model has been calibrated.
Separate setup from recurring work
Engineering review, tooling, fixture development, and test preparation may be spread across an order. Materials, processing, inspection, and handling recur with quantity. Ask which charges are one-time, which recur on repeat orders, and what happens when the design revision changes.
Review panel utilization before reducing board area
The bounding rectangle and the actual outline are different. Long flex tails, irregular rigid islands, grain orientation, spacing, and support features affect panel use. A smaller outline does not necessarily produce more good boards per panel. Ask the partner to identify whether an outline change would improve usable panel yield.
Simplify only where the requirement allows
Reducing unnecessary flex copper layers, choosing compatible stocked materials, avoiding unjustified sequential lamination, and stabilizing tolerances can reduce process work. Keep the electrical return path, bend requirement, and assembly support intact. A lower board price that adds connectors or manual assembly may raise the installed cost.
Normalize competing quotations
Compare currency, order quantity, setup, bare-board price, assembly, tooling ownership, inspection documentation, freight, tax, and delivery assumptions. Record proposed material substitutions and test exclusions. A low price with unpriced engineering changes is not directly comparable to a complete released build.
Use a range responsibly
A calibrated planning model still cannot predict exact panel layout, scrap yield, procurement changes, or the result of DFM. Carry an uncertainty range and identify excluded items. Use the online estimate to prepare a conversation, then obtain an exact quotation against an agreed revision.
