Part of the rigid-flex circuit board resource.
Rigid-flex can be useful in compact sensors, control modules, and space-constrained machinery interfaces. The design should begin with the packaging and reliability requirements of the product, then test whether integration provides a useful advantage over separate boards and cables. This application guide describes engineering considerations; it does not claim industry certification or approved supplier status.
Define the operating environment
Distinguish a fixed installed interconnect from a moving cable path. Repeated machine motion requires a deliberate mechanical design and qualification; an integrated rigid-flex assembly is not automatically a substitute for every dynamic cable.
Review the product interface
Specify enclosure support, vibration, contaminants, temperature, and service access. Consider whether an integrated board simplifies the system or makes replacement of a single worn region unnecessarily expensive.
Make the mechanical requirement visible
Provide the flat outline, folded geometry, attachment points, minimum available bend envelope, and installation sequence. Mark any area that moves in normal use. Review the transition and routing guidelines together with the mechanical team. A clear drawing is more useful than a broad instruction to make the circuit flexible.
Connect the stackup to the verification plan
Choose a regional stackup with only the flexible copper layers needed for the electrical interconnect. Select the complete material system for the operating and assembly conditions. Define the measurements or tests that demonstrate the relevant function, including the state of the assembled circuit during testing.
Prepare the first build
Use a prototype plan that answers a specific design question. Record substitutions and distinguish preliminary fit evidence from production qualification. For a partner capability review, send quantities, drawings, materials, inspection needs, assembly requirements, and schedule through the rigid-flex RFQ form.
