ENGINEERING RESOURCES / RIGID-FLEX CIRCUITS[email protected]

Part of the rigid-flex circuit board resource.

Rigid-flex can be useful in weight-sensitive assemblies, compact avionics packaging, and mechanically constrained sensor electronics. The design should begin with the packaging and reliability requirements of the product, then test whether integration provides a useful advantage over separate boards and cables. This application guide describes engineering considerations; it does not claim industry certification or approved supplier status.

Define the operating environment

Specify temperature range, vibration, shock, humidity, and any other environment that matters to the intended assembly. A material family name does not establish qualification for the application.

Review the product interface

Identify the required manufacturing entity, documentation, material traceability, inspection scope, and any procurement or handling restrictions. Review those requirements with the proposed partner before sending controlled technical information.

Make the mechanical requirement visible

Provide the flat outline, folded geometry, attachment points, minimum available bend envelope, and installation sequence. Mark any area that moves in normal use. Review the transition and routing guidelines together with the mechanical team. A clear drawing is more useful than a broad instruction to make the circuit flexible.

Connect the stackup to the verification plan

Choose a regional stackup with only the flexible copper layers needed for the electrical interconnect. Select the complete material system for the operating and assembly conditions. Define the measurements or tests that demonstrate the relevant function, including the state of the assembled circuit during testing.

Prepare the first build

Use a prototype plan that answers a specific design question. Record substitutions and distinguish preliminary fit evidence from production qualification. For a partner capability review, send quantities, drawings, materials, inspection needs, assembly requirements, and schedule through the rigid-flex RFQ form.
