ENGINEERING RESOURCES / RIGID-FLEX CIRCUITS[email protected]

Part of the rigid-flex circuit board resource.

A rigid-flex fabrication package defines more than a copper image. Show the rigid regions, exposed flexible spans, transitions, coverlay boundaries, and the copper layers that continue through each area. Give the fabricator both the flat outline and a folded assembly view. Resolve ambiguous layer naming before comparing prices.

Build the flexible circuitry first

The flexible subcircuit is produced from the specified laminate and copper system. Imaging and etching create conductors; coverlay protects the exposed flexible regions while leaving defined contact openings. The actual order depends on the construction, so the manufacturing drawing should define the result rather than prescribe an unsupported process.

Combine the rigid and flexible regions

Rigid materials and bonding layers are added around the flex substack. Windowing and resin-flow control keep the intended flex spans free to move. Subsequent drilling, plating, and patterning connect the required layers. HDI designs may add laser drilling and sequential lamination; evaluate that complexity with the fabricator before committing to via architecture.

Release and inspect the finished construction

Profiling exposes the flexible areas and establishes the final outline. Electrical testing checks the specified connectivity. Dimensional, visual, impedance, and construction checks must match the purchase requirements. A photograph of an intact board does not establish plating quality or bend endurance.

Compare supplier responses consistently

Use the same revision, quantities, material requirements, test scope, and delivery assumptions for each request. Ask for explicit deviations, proposed substitutions, and unresolved DFM items. Obtain the named manufacturing entity and applicable evidence before relying on certifications or capability limits. RigidFlexPCB coordinates inquiries with manufacturing partners and does not claim to operate a fabrication factory.
