Part of the rigid-flex circuit board resource.
Rigid islands connected by thin flexible spans need a handling plan. Panel rails, temporary supports, pallets, or fixtures may be needed for printing, placement, reflow, and inspection. Review how the assembly stays flat and how the fixture releases without stressing the transition or components.
Resolve moisture and thermal requirements
Polyimide-based constructions and their bonding materials have process-specific moisture and temperature constraints. Obtain storage, conditioning, and reflow guidance for the exact stack and component population. There is no universal bake temperature and duration suitable for every finished rigid-flex assembly; a bake can also affect components or finishes.
Place components around the fold sequence
Keep component bodies, solder joints, and soldered wire attachments out of the moving flex zone unless deliberately engineered and qualified. Check tool access, connector mating direction, fixture contact points, and component collision in the final enclosure. A board can pass a flat layout check and still be impossible to assemble after folding.
Define the assembly handoff
Provide the BOM with manufacturer part numbers, approved alternatives, centroid data, polarity information, assembly drawing, panel constraints, and test instructions. Mark customer-supplied parts and identify any programming or calibration step. State whether the quote should cover bare boards, component procurement, or full assembly.
Test the assembled interconnect
Electrical continuity before folding does not prove operation after installation. Define the assembly state for functional test, the allowable folding operations, and the sample plan for motion testing where applicable. Use a fixture that reproduces the intended strain relief, not an arbitrary hand bend.
